CropX Vision

This section is here to help you understand how CropX Vision works, how to use it correctly, and how to interpret the results.

How CropX Vision Works

CropX Vision measures leaf water potential, which indicates how water-stressed your crop is. Instead of using a pressure chamber to measure a single leaf at a single moment, Vision uses images of the canopy to calculate an average water stress value over an area.

This makes it faster, easier, and more scalable to:
  • Compare different fields
  • Compare rows within a field
  • Track changes over time
  • Support irrigation decisions

Vision is designed to show patterns and trends, not just one isolated measurement.

  • An iPhone
  • The CropX Vision app
No special equipment is required.
Before starting a reading, make sure that:
  • You are filming the sunny side of the canopy
  • The canopy is well lit
  • The camera is pointed at the entire canopy
Good lighting is important for accurate results.
  1. Open the CropX Vision app
  2. Press Start
  3. You will see the message “Capturing”
This means the session has begun.
  • Walk naturally along the row
  • You can walk:
    • A few feet
    • Many feet
    • Or an entire row
  • The reading represents the entire area you walked
You can capture:
  • One vine
  • Several vines
  • Or a full row
You may occasionally see a message saying “Not capturing – too shady”. This means:
  • Some images are too dark
  • Those images are ignored
  • The session continues normally
This is expected behavior.
  1. Press Stop
  2. The app displays the average leaf water potential for the area you recorded
  • You do not need internet access to take a reading
  • You can take readings at any time of day, as long as the canopy is well lit
  • Vision does not require solar noon timing like a pressure chamber
The value shown after a reading represents leaf water potential. In general:
  • Lower values mean less stress
  • Higher values mean more stress
Results should always be interpreted in context:
  • Compare between rows
  • Compare between fields
  • Compare before and after irrigation
  • Compare across days
Vision is most powerful when used for comparison and trends, not single measurements.
In very dry or hot conditions, it’s common for:
  • Many rows
  • Many fields
  • Or even an entire region
to show similarly high stress values.

This usually reflects real environmental conditions, not an issue with the app.

Vision helps you:
  • Identify which areas respond to irrigation
  • See which rows recover faster
  • Detect differences that are hard to see otherwise

Not all fields behave the same, even if they care close together.

Differences may be caused by:
  • Irrigation timing
  • Soil variability
  • Root depth
  • Canopy density
  • Microclimate
Vision helps you visualize these differences clearly and consistently.

A water stress “bomb” is a sudden spike in plant stress.

This can be caused by:

  • Lower values mean less stress
  • Higher values mean more stress

Results should always be interpreted in context:

  • Compare between rows
  • Compare between fields
  • Compare before and after irrigation
  • Compare across days

Vision is most powerful when used for comparison and trends, not single measurements.

CropX Vision has different access modes, depending on how you use the product.
If a field has an active ET sensor / Tule tower:
  • Vision usage in that field is unlimited
  • Images and history are always available
  • The field does not count toward your acreage
For fields without an ET Sensor:
  • Vision usage is part of an acre-based subscription
  • Each field is counted once, based on its acreage
  • Multiple images in the same field do not add more acres
Your subscription includes:
  • A fixed number of acres
  • Unlimited users
  • Full access to history within your plan
If you are new to CropX Vision:
  • You can try Vision for free
  • Usage is limited by number of images
  • Images are not linked to fields
  • After the free limit, results are locked but never deleted
Upgrading unlocks all previous data.
For fields without an ET sensor, Vision is offered in acre-based packages. Packages are tiered, for example:
  • Less than 10 acres
  • 10+ acres
  • 25+ acres
  • 50+ acres
  • 100+ acres
  • 250+ acres
  • 500+ acres
  • 1,000+ acres
As you move to a higher tier:
  • You purchase more acres
  • The price per acre decreases

You pay once per year for the selected acreage.

Each field is counted once, based on its size, regardless of how many images you take.

You can always see how many acres you purchased, how many are used, and how many remain.

Images are never deleted.

Images may be locked if:
  • You exceeded your acreage limit
  • The image is not linked to a field (for paid users)
  • You reached the free trial limit
Locked images unlock automatically when:
  • You add more acres
  • You assign the image to a field
  • You upgrade from the free trial

Yes.

After each Vision session, you can view:
  • The images taken
  • When the session occurred
  • Where it took place in the field
  • Who captured the reading
This allows you and your team to review, compare, and validate results over time.
Yes. After each Vision reading:
  • You can see the results immediately in the CropX Vision mobile app
  • The results are also available in the CropX web platform
  • Vision data is included in your monthly reports, such as the ET Index report
This means you can:
  • Review results right away in the field
  • Analyze trends later from your computer
  • Track changes over time in your regular CropX reports
All readings, images, and locations are stored and available for future reference.
No. Readings can be taken at any time of day, as long as the canopy is well lit.
One row is fine. More rows give a more representative average.
Yes. Anyone on your team can use the app.
Vision measures an average over an area, not a single leaf.

Yes. Data is stored and never deleted.

CropX Vision is designed to help you:

  • See patterns
  • Understand variability
  • Make better irrigation decisions

It does not replace agronomic judgment – it supports it.
